| The Long Strange Wonderful Tragic History 1968-Sept.18 -Get my first instrument- a clarinet 1968-Sept 30-insufficient progress made on clarinet, will be taken away by 10/7/1968 1968-Oct. 7-after 22 hours of practice that week , get inducted to concert as 3rd clarinet, 2nd chair. i guess instrument will not be taken away haha 1969-Apr.24- promoted to 1st clarinet 2nd chair and was able to play any major scale for 3 octaves.didn't they want me not to play anymore 6 1/2 months ago??? Foo-Foo(1968-1969) 1970-Jan 5- enter trombone section as 3rd ,2nd chair after falsely accusing clarinet for causing dental problems.( i actually no longer wanted to play instrument who's section is largely populated by gals. times do change, don't they??? 1970-June 11-get trumpet for 6th grade graduation.started 1st band, the"Long Island Sound"that summer with me on trumpet, 2 singers and a drummer.probably the roots of my present tendency for unusual instrumentation haha 1 Martin Gritz (1957-1970) Honey(1969-1971) 1971 Jun 24 -my bar mitzvah 1971-Jun 27 -buy cheap 6-string acoustic but never to this day learned how to work such contraptions. resumed the trumpet that summer in Long Island Sound 1971 Aug.12-the drummer's father gets bass guitar.first time i tried it i had to have one. 1971-Sept.18-use rest of Bar Mitzvah money and paper route money ($100) to buy "Kimberly" bass and "Domino" 25 watt bass amp with 12" speaker. 1971-Sept 22 joined Junior High jazz band as bass player. 1971-Dec 14-22-me and singer Michael N*lson (1959-1994) formed a folk-rock outfit called the Era of Peace and wrote a song to protest the war in Viet Nam 1971-Dec.29 -first heard Jethro Tull when "Hymn 43" was #86 for the year 1971 on WABC_AM top 100 charts. My original reaction was that guy Jethro sounds angry and i think he's palying the flute. 1972-Jan 14-switched from trombone to tuba 1972 Feb 2 promoted to 2nd tuba 1972 March 16-promoted to 1st tuba after just 2 months of playing!! 1972 June 14- got new Jethro Tull album "Thick As A Brick" for my birthday. Found out Jethro Tull was a group and not a guy.Got first 4 albums by September that year 1973 March 3-joined first real rock group as bass player called "Solid Gold"(ouch) til 5/1973, then "Image"(ouch) until 2/1974 then "Arion" until 12/1/1974 and finally "Transit" 12/1/1974 until my involuntary separation from them until 7/8/1976.Other members were Nick M*lcuit (19*8- )guitar, vocals,(1973-1976 )Rich R*selli (19*8- ) saxophones(1973-1976) trumpet players were Frank DiGr*gorio(19*8- )(1973-1974),John Kl*mp(19**7- )(1974) and Ike P*rdo(195*- )(1974-1976) who doubled on Univox Mini-Korg synthesizer who was also my best bud from 1975 until we lost touch in 1978.Keyboard players were Mike Grieco(1973-1974) Rick Suchow(1975-1976) who came to fame by writing Ringo Starr's 'What Goes Around) and was probably the most musically successful of us all. Drummers were Kevin Gi*liano(19*8- )(1973) Pete Ch*di*chimo(19*3- ) (1974) Billy K*utz(19*8- ) (1974-1975) and Paul Marcucci(1959- )(1975-1976).we achieved as Transit much success to put me being 5'4" and 200+ pounds at the time with of course long frizzy hair in the same popularity tier as let's say a 2nd string linebacker.Originally covering Chicago songs, we became a hard rock band by 1974 covering the Who largely as well as a lot of other now classic rock, then the latest thing around!! then going to originals primarily jazz /rock fusion and some more straight rock. i had penned 2 songs on our set list, 1974's "No Limit" and 1975's "Que'lude Pre'lude(sorry haha) which i actually did the lead singing on!! 1973 June 29-The Image plays first gig. got paid $5/each and became professional musicians that day. 1973 Nov.27 The Grateful Dead replace Jethro Tull as my favorite group. Rose Marcus my Grandmother (1893-1974) (my oldest daughter Heidi Rachel is named after her) Winter-Spring 1974-Arion hits the VFW circuit as all our classmates were needing groups to play their sweet 16's. 1974-Apr.15- bought 1973 Fender Precision Bass for $180 brand new which i still play today as well as the cool looking red copy with the maple neck from 2002 1974- Nov.17- get the Who's Quadrophenia in record club. 1974-Nov. 18 the Who replaced Grateful Dead as favorite group. 1974 Nov 30-buy Quadrophenia sheet music for $3.95 and learn the John Entwistle's(1944-2002) bass part for the "Real Me" note for note. 1974 Dec 1-Arion becomes Transit 1974 Dec 12-join Ricky Suchow(keyboard, vocals) in side project with Jon B*uer(1959- )lead guitar, and Marc Lipton(1958- ) drums . originally "Stinkfoot"(1974), then "Intrepid"(1974-1975) t 1974 Dec 17-Transit plays International Holiday Festival at high school opening with the Who's "Real Me" at that point to graduation i was considered the school's best bass player. who would have thunk?? 1975-May 2 recorded "Hydroxyl" with Ricky Suchow, the name from our 11th grade chemistry class meaning 'base' (vs. alkaline) hence became my first time playing chords on the bass and overdubbing regular bass parts backed up by Rick's keyboards. what could i have been thinking?? 1975 Jul. 13 attacked by skinhead while playing pinball in Greaser Hut as recounted in "Pinball Machine" 1975-Aug 28-THE concert at the north Bellmore Public Library. originally booked opening act Starlight Glider backed out last minute leaving about 2 1/2 hours for Transit's set.The house was packed so much that they had to move shelves of books to make room for additional audience!! Our picture was in 9/4/1975 local paper. despite all the triumph of that night, perhaps the highlight for me was when some bully named Gary L**ifer who harried me in the 10th grade was there and and came up to me after show and said,'great job , man you really rock" and then tried to reenact my bass antics of the night. Whatta sight!!! 1975-Nov 21- i think it was at JFK High School. i had a 3 minute free form bass solo in billy Cobham's "Stratus" .the reaction from the audience had to be one of the finer moments ever!! THE WARM-UP BAND, A Disco outfit named RPM(ouch!!!) supplied them with my replacement , disco bassist extraodinaire, Phil Ava*nzado after Transit s*ld out in 7/1976 becoming a disco band. really!! i'm trying to find Phil's musical website but you guessed, it's just not out there!!!(or maybe he's using a pseudonym) i showed them haha 1976 Feb 1 & 2-Transit featured act at high school pop concert. Performs 'Change it' and Get It Straight" after i had taken heat from band leaders of overplaying the bass(surprise surprise!!) and playing disco songs in hard rock John Entwistle style(my bad !!!) this was 1976 you know!! 1976 Apr.24 Transit records demo in 16 track recording studio featuring 'Change It" No Limit" 'Get It Straight" "Equilibrium' and who knows what else.the engineer had to put some kind of thingy on my 1/4" unbalanced jack to prevent noise as i bopped around. 1976 May 17 played a concert featuring both Transit and Intrepid. had no rest that day, just fun!! 1976 Jun 26-graduated high school 1976 Jul 8-i'm ousted from Transit after 3 1/2 years with the group.i'm replaced by disco afficianado bassist Phil Av*anzado . 1976 Jul 9- Join a garage band named Quadrant who seeked me ever since i was thrown out of Transit.other members were Lonnie Fr*osch( 19*7- )lead guitar Paul An*bile(19*0- )lead singer Dave Go*dman keyboards and Phil Melli*a as drummer. 1976 Aug 31 after productive summer, Quadrant goes on hiatus as Lonnie goes upstate to college. 1976 Oct 2 audition and get accepted to metal outfit, Trigger. Marty Himm*er,(a Jew) lead guitar adopts stagename "Simms" because he thinks it sounds too close to 'Hitler" without regard to 3rd reich murderer Heinrich Himmler.
